Choosing a Courrier

Choosing a Courier for Artcarme

At Artcarme, we understand how important it is to ensure your artwork reaches its destination safely and quickly. Based on our extensive experience working with various couriers, we’d like to share a few key insights with you.

1. Choose the Fastest, Not the Cheapest Courier

While it might be tempting to choose the cheapest courier option, it’s often not the best choice. We’ve encountered situations where low-cost couriers use self-employed delivery drivers who lack proper facilities, such as depots for undelivered items. In some cases, artworks have been hidden behind bins, left in unsafe locations, or even thrown over gates—all in an attempt to claim the parcel was delivered.

At Artcarme, we prioritize the fastest delivery method, ensuring your artwork is handled the least number of times, minimizing the risk of damage.

2. Proper Wrapping and Packaging

Packaging is crucial for protecting your artwork during transit. To avoid unnecessary handling, we recommend not shipping parcels on Fridays, as they may sit in a depot over the weekend, leading to extra handling.

For optimal protection, use strong cardboard and wrap your artwork in high-quality bubble wrap—double-wrapping is highly recommended. If your artwork is on canvas, take the extra step to protect the front and corners with additional cardboard. While “fragile” tape may offer reassurance to customers, it doesn’t hold much value with couriers, so ensure the packaging is robust enough to withstand rough handling.

3. Insurance for Artwork

It’s important to remember that, in case of damage, the artist is responsible for the loss.

Many couriers offer insurance options beyond a basic fixed limit. Be sure to verify that your chosen courier offers insurance for paintings and other artworks before you purchase coverage, as many couriers exclude artworks from their standard insurance policies, despite gladly accepting the premium.

4. Returns and Customer Satisfaction

The vast majority of artworks arrive at their destination safely. The return rate for customers who have the legal right to change their mind is incredibly low—less than 1 in 250. In most cases, returns are due to damaged items.

An unsatisfied customer doesn’t just choose not to buy from you again. A negative experience can impact Artcarme as a whole, affecting not only your reputation but that of other artists too. Always prioritize safe delivery to maintain trust with your customers.
